The Way God Sees Us

One of the most effective ways that the enemy causes confusion & misunderstanding among God’s children is by lying to us about who we are. We tend to see ourselves as the things that we struggle with or have done. I’m a liar, I’m a cheater, I’m proud, I’m a drug addict or porn addict. This leaves us feeling defeated, unlovable, & hopeless.

As Christians we need to understand & grasp the power of the blood of Christ. When God looks at us he doesn’t see us covered in our sins or as the addict, liar, proud person that we see. He sees us through the veil of Christ’s blood which allows Him to see us as whole, new & clean.

He has given us amazing examples of this in His word. I learn the best through story, seeing a lesson  or truth lived or played out & so seeing the depth of His love & power of His sacrifice over & over throughout scripture has completely changed my life.

We look at Peter who after just having spent time with Jesus face to face, denies knowing Him 3 times in the same night. Peter, out of fear of man, doesn’t want to be associated with Jesus. But God had chosen Peter for great things, full well knowing that Peter would deny him 3 times. God didn’t take back his blessing & desire to use Peter. In the book of Matthew God says, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” God had chosen Peter & used him in huge ways knowing that Peter would deny Him.

We see David who is called in scripture a man after God’s heart. David wrote some of my favorite Psalms. But if we look at his life, we see an adulterer & a murderer. We often label people in that way by what they have done. But God does not. He looks at David & sees, above all things, David’s heart & He is crazy about David. The power of Jesus blood, once again, allows God to see David, to see us, as pure & holy even after we sin terribly. It doesn’t make sense and yet it is what Christianity is all about. The power of the blood of Christ to make us clean & able to have relationship with a powerful & holy God.

We look at the Israelites and how they sinned & went their own way time & time again, even after experiencing all of these miracles. Each time eventually returning to their old ways. And yet God continues to draw them to Him over & over with open arms, wanting relationship with them even though they kept getting it wrong.

Then there’s Abraham who God said would be the Father of many nations. When Abraham was old and was still without kids, he & his wife decided they would make God’s promise happen instead of waiting & trusting God to do what He said he would do. Abraham sleeps with Hagar, the handmaiden, in order to have a child and “help” God out. And yet God uses Abraham in huge ways & blesses Abraham & his wife with a child even still.

What I see from these examples in the Bible is God’s relentless love & affection towards His people. The kind of love that doesn’t give up, a love that pursues. I see the power of the sacrifice of Jesus in that His blood has made us clean & able to have relationship with God & gives us a seat of honor at the table. This allows God to see us as whole, clean & beautiful no matter what our sin, no matter what our struggle.

I think some churches are afraid to preach this kind of amazing, powerful love because they fear it will cause Christians to take advantage of this unbelievable grace. If God will forgive me then why not sin? But Christians who have the spirit of God in them will see these examples of God’s love & the power of His grace & sacrifice & it will lead them to repentance & a desire to worship this amazing, loving God with everything in them. It’s His love that leads us to repentance.

So I encourage you to remember the power of the blood of Jesus that invites you into relationship with the God of the universe. Know that you will get it wrong sometimes but that doesn’t disqualify you from God’s love or from being used mightily by Him. When we, as Christians, begin to walk in the fullness of who God has made us to be, knowing His relentless love for us & the power that His blood has to make us whole, new & beautiful in His sight it changes everything.
